Seminar Presentation: ‘Resilient Cities, Smart Citizens’

Resilient Cities, Smart Citizen A five-day workshop followed by a one-day seminar about enabling citizens to make their cities more resilient to the physical, social, and economic challenges of the 21st century.

How can cities around the world become more resilient to the physical, social, and economic challenges that are a growing part of the 21st century? How can we enable citizens to be at the center of the solutions? What can design and creativity bring to the table? And how can city governments find new ways to collaborate with these new actors? Can we facilitate a new economic model that helps to foster digital social innovation and entrepreneurship?

During the Dutch presidency of the EU the Dutch consulate in Rio de Janeiro and the Rio Prefeitura have taken the initiative to bring together designers, civil servants, citizens and entrepreneurs for a week-long design workshop (9-13 May) followed by a one-day seminar (16 May). They will prototype new design and approaches to transforming cities, by using and enhancing the power of its citizens to take positive action.

Participation is free, but on invitation. For more information on the program, and to apply for an invitation go to http://resilientcities.com.br

Materials

The seminar will take place at the beautifully renovated building of IED. IED has kindly offered the seminar room and the technical facilities, including

  • a projection set, format 4:3
  • a Windows presentation laptop (if you’d rather bring your own laptop, please do let us know. In case of a Mac, please do also bring your own adaptors for projection).
  • an audioset with microphones

Please send me your presentation materials (Powerpoint or Keynote preferably) on 11 May latest. If you use video, also send me that as a separate file.

Language
We will provide for a simultaneous translation. However, as you (and our audience) come from several parts in the world, and the Q&A will be in a panel-format, using the English language would be highly preferred as presentation language.

Press, photos and videos
The Dutch Consulate has actively invited members of the press. Please be aware that journalists might be present in the audience.

In addition we will be recording some of the talks and making photographs during the day. Please indicate specifically if you consent with video or photo materials of yourself or your presentations to be used in public channels (either online or in traditional media).

Practical
The IED Rio is located in the wonderfully renovated old casino at Av. João Luís Alves, 13 – Urca, Rio de Janeiro
For the speakers that come from outside of Rio de Janeiro/Brasil, we will arrange transportation to the venue (exact information on transportation will follow next week). I would like to request speakers from within Rio de Janeiro, to arrive at least 30 minutes before ‘their’ sub-theme starts.
